Selection of diving and nautical books

I have loads of people asking me what books to read and websites to visit in preparation for First Class Diver and National Instructor. Here is a selection of what's on my shelf. If you have the time also take a look at my useful links for divers.

Of course the first thing I must say is get out there diving and if not diving, planning a dive! These books are for consultation strictly for when one has been:

  • blown out
  • bored with the inlaws/outlaws at Christmas
  • bored with ridiculous soaps on TV
  • trapped in the loo following a particularly fierce phaal
  • trapped on a liveaboard with G&T guzzling sunseekers
  • in bed when the 'Mrs' has her rollers in or the 'Mr' has taken his false teeth out...

On my shelf:

British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC)

  • All the Skill Development Course manuals (you have to do the course first!)
  • The Dive Manual (even if you experienced you will get something out of it)
  • Dive leading
  • Seamanship: a guide for divers
  • All the Technical Course Manuals (these are really excellent)
  • The diving instructors manual (indispensable for the National Instructor - NI - candidate)

Weather

  • Weather at sea: David Houghton
  • The Weather Handbook: Alan Watts
  • RYA Weather Forecasts (G502): David Houghton
  • RYA Weather: Chris Tibbs

Diving

  • All the TDI technical manuals
  • Doing it Right - The Fundamentals of Better Diving: Jarrod Jablonski
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Diving Manual
  • US Navy Diving Manual
  • The Wreck Diving Manual: Lizzy Bird (old, but it will surprise you what you have forgotten)

Boats and seamanship

  • Reeds Nautical Almanac (the first section is invaluable for a reference for all things Nautical)
  • A handbook of knots and knot tying: Geoffrey Budworth
  • Manual of Seamanship: Tom Cunliffe
  • A Seaman's Guide to the Rules of the Road: Based on the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea 1972/1995
  • Sorensen's Guide to Powerboats: Eric W Sorensen
  • Day Skipper: Pat Langley-Price & Philip Ouvry
  • Boat Safety Handbook
  • RYA VHF radio (incl GMDSS)
  • RYA Navigation exercises: Chris Slade and Sara Hopkinson
  • RYA Day skipper - Shore based course notes
  • RYA Book of Navigation: Tim Bartlett

Medical

  • Diving and Subaquatic Medicine: Carl Edmonds, Christopher Lowry, John Pennefather & Robyn Walker
  • Physiology and medicine of diving: Bennett and Elliott
  • First Aid manual: Dorling Kindersley

Other

  • Marine fish and invertebrates of Northern Europe: Frank Emil Moen & Erling Svensen
  • Nautical Archaeological Society Journal's & newsletters

Please contribute and tell me if there are any others which I am missing and why...
