Songs that inspired: Highway Star - Deep Purple - A wild fury of undistilled rock... - by Simon Campbell

I am often asked what artists and songs inspired me to write songs and pick up the guitar. This is the third in the series of posts and features Deep Purple from the live 'Made In Japan' album.

I love live albums and generally prefer them to the original studio version. This is probably the best live rock album of all time and leaves the studio album languishing.

The band were amazingly tight and Blackmore's guitar literally freaked me out. You can sing the solo's...

I immediately sat down with my reel to reel recorder playing the tracks back at half speed, learnt the whole album note for note along with Wishbone Ash's 'Argus' and the first five Led Zeppelin albums...

My fingers were bleeding and my mother was going apeshit (it took me six months)...

It's only recently that I totally captured that ridiculously amazing sound of Blackmore's guitar. I recently picked up a direct copy of a Dallas Rangemaster from ace pedal guru, Dan Whitelock-Jones. So, just plug my Strat into my Germino Classic 45 plus 4x12 and there you have it...

Anyway, this is the classic lineup of one of the greatest rock bands, ever. Can you tell me any rock 'n roll Hammond player who doesn't copy the late, great John Lord, emulate Gillan, secretly prefer Ian Paice to Bonham, try to grind and groove the bass like Glover and create melodies like Blackmore.

The band:

And as a point of trivia, Derek Lawrence produced our 'Little Brother' album in the early 90's; he also produced Argus and the first three Deep Purple records. Funny world 'ain't it...

Enjoy.
