I am often asked what artists and songs inspired me to write songs and pick up the guitar. This is the first in the series of posts and features Eric Clapton at his best from the live 'EC Was Here' album.
I was weaned on Wishbone Ash, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and it wasn't for two years someone came to a gig and said "Simon, you are a great blues player".
I was outraged!!! I played rock and had never heard a 'blues' song in my life (I didn't realise that everything I had learned was a very short step removed from it) and frankly thought it was a bit wet!
Well anyway, it was 1975 and looked around (remember no internet, spotify or youtube) and found that Eric Clapton, who I knew from Cream had recently released a new live album, with a load of 'blues' on it. The album was E.C. Was Here.
The whole album contains Eric's finest guitar playing in my my opinion. I suggest you listen to the whole thing, preferably on vinyl!!
