Review of Starlite Campbell Band at Linton Festival by Graham Munn of Slap Magazine
Saturday, and Starlite Campbell were opening the stage, Suzy was born in nearby Ross, Simon Campbell being from up North, the band included Jonny Henderson with his organic Hammond/Leslie combo, drums were in the very capable hands of Steve Gibson. In 2017 they released Blueberry Pie, a tasty album that found success across the world, and nomination for European Blues Awards.
The band were soon slicing into the pie, rich plummy bass notes from Suzy, were laced with Latin drum rhythms, as Simon introduced a psychedelic edge to the guitar lead, and Jonny stirred the mix of, ‘I Need A Light’. Simon’s Drake guitar sweetened the air with honeyed notes, on a soulful, ‘Cry Over You’. ‘Your So Good For Me’ shuffled out over Jonny’s liquid, Hammond pool, a rocking ride with a 70’s essence.
The deep bass throbs in, Steve’s thumping in the beat, Suzy is feeling moody and, ‘Guilty’. As she takes vocal lead, and Simon soars over Jonny’s organic clouds.
There set finished with Blueberry Pie’s opening track a superb blues, that has the feel of Mayall or Mac, in the heyday of Peter Green, The Hammond is sublime, guitar notes with just enough dirt ground in, with drum and bass rhythm laying the all important foundations.
