Wonderful review of Blueberry Pie by John Mitchell of Blues in Britain - an update from Simon Campbell

Lovely review by John Mitchell of Blues in Britain. Thanks man!!!

The Starlite Campbell Band features husband and wife Simon Campbell and Suzy Starlite on guitar and vocals and bass and vocals respectively; joining them on this debut disc (recorded in Spain) are Jonny Henderson on keys and Steve Gibson on drums.

This album is entirely original, co-written by Suzy and Simon and has good melodies and songs. Simon handles most lead vocals with Suzy leading on just one song.

Opener ‘Walking Out The Door’ has some great ‘Green Onions’ style Hammond from Jonny and varied guitar from Simon as the rhythm section sets a strong pace. Suzy’s bass leads into ‘I Need A Light’, the piano and shimmering wah-wah working well with Simon’s light vocals before the busy blues-rock of ‘You’re So Good For Me’ provides a springboard for some lightning fast riffs from Simon.

‘Say What You Want’ takes us into Brit Rn’B territory with Spanish harp player Danny Boy Sánchez and title track ‘Blueberry Pie’ is an acoustic track with a folk feel. Suzy’s only vocal lead is on the pulsing ‘Guilty’, the track also having some scorching guitar from Simon. ‘Shimmy’ is a solid instrumental which allows Simon to show us his range.

The album closes with ‘Thrill You’, a song that could easily have been recorded by Billie Holiday or Ray Charles with its blues/gospel feel courtesy of Jonny’s superb Hammond work.

This is an excellent debut disc with several standout tracks; I really look forward to seeing this band live.
